Instructions to authors

Scope and policy

El Taco en la Brea is an exclusively electronic scientific journal, published twice a year: the issue released in May covers the period from December to May, and the one released in November covers the period from June to November. Only original and unpublished articles in Spanish and Portuguese presenting research results in the field of literary studies and not simultaneously under review by another publication will be accepted. The journal also welcomes bibliographic reviews. Both articles and reviews will be limited to the scope of literary theory and criticism and will adhere to the protocols outlined in the Submission Guidelines.

The objective of the journal is to disseminate the results of scientific research in the field of literary theory and criticism. It is intended for students, teachers, and researchers in the aforementioned areas.

Journal Frequency

El Taco en la Brea is published twice a year.

  • First edition: December/May.

  • Second edition: June/November.

Sections

The journal consists of a set of fixed sections ("Papeles de investigación," "Dossier," "Apuntes") and other occasional sections ("Archivo," "Conversaciones", "Pasajes," "Envíos").

Fixed Sections:

"Papeles de investigación": brings together scientific articles received in the permanently open call for papers.

"Dossier": presents scientific articles around a central problem in the field.

"Apuntes": section dedicated to reviews of recent scientific publications in the field of literary theory and criticism (the book reviewed must have been published within the last two years).

Occasional Sections:

"Archivo": section dedicated to housing and publicly accessing texts that have marked the agenda of literary theory and criticism and have remained unpublished.

"Conversaciones": collects interviews with writers, critics, professors, editors, etc.

"Pasajes": circulates translations of recent texts that have generated important debates in the field and/or propose new theoretical and/or methodological categories.

"Envíos": section dedicated to publishing "news" of ongoing translations that, due to not having the editorial rights, cannot be circulated. A passage is included, not exceeding the limit allowed by Argentine law for a bibliographic citation to avoid legal problems.

Submitting of Works

The call for the submission of articles and reviews is always open. Depending on the quantity of works received and accepted, it will be communicated in which issue they will be published, respecting the date of approval as an organizing criterion. Given the continuous submission of articles and reviews (continuous flow system), it is clarified that the number to be published in May closes in March of the same year, and the number to be published in November closes in October of the same year.

To publish a "Dossier," it is necessary to submit a proposal to the Editorial Board of the journal with at least one year in advance. This proposal, in charge of the dossier coordinator, must contain the topic to be addressed. If the proposal is approved by the Board, a call for the submission of works that will integrate it will be opened. These works will be subject to evaluation by two external referees through the double-blind system.

Translations, interviews, and articles in the Archive and Submissions sections come from proposals made by the scientific committee.

Peer Review Process

The evaluation of articles, in addition to being organized through the Open Journal System (OJS), follows these procedures:

The co-director and Editorial Board control aspects related to both compliance with the protocols for article writing and their suitability to the contents of the journal. If the article complies with these protocols, the editorial secretaries register the date of receipt of the article and send it to two external referees selected from the Permanent Advisory Committee who evaluate according to the principle of double-blind review (the reviewer does not know the author and the author does not know their reviewers). Maximum time: 30 days.

In the evaluation of articles, the two external referees selected from the Permanent Advisory Committee follow the following criteria included in the Guide provided by the journal (available here): significance (originality of the work and relevance in relation to the area of concern of the journal), presentation (conceptual and expressive clarity), state of the art (knowledge and citation of other relevant research on the topic), evidence (articulation between methodology, data and analysis, relevance and sufficiency of the data in relation to the conclusions), reasoning (solidity of logic, arguments, inferences and interpretations), theory (adequacy, soundness in the use and appropriation). The verdict of the referees includes three possibilities: article approved for publication without modifications, article subject to partial modifications for eventual publication, article rejected.

If the article is accepted by both external referees, the editorial secretaries communicate to the author whether or not changes are required. When the author submits the corrected text, the editorial secretaries forward the version to the same two external referees (this date is recorded as "Submission with revisions"). If they approve the new version, they note the corresponding "Acceptance date" and communicate the decision to the author, who, upon being notified, must send the rights transfer note. If the article is rejected, the editorial secretaries communicate the decision to the author. In all cases, the author has access to the report. When an article has one evaluation approving publication, with or without modifications, and another rejecting it, it is the editor-in-chief who makes the final decision.

The response to authors regarding the acceptance or rejection of their work depends on the referees' timelines, which will not be less than forty days or more than sixty. In any case, between the receipt and communication of the double external referee's verdict, no more than three months will pass.

Translations, interviews, reviews, and articles in the Archive and Submissions sections are subject to the Editorial Board's review.

The ultimate scientific and legal responsibility for what is published in El taco en la brea lies with the director.

Ethical Aspects and Conflicts of Interest

We assume that those who make and publish in "El Taco en la Brea" are aware of and adhere to both the CONICET document: Guidelines for ethical behavior in social sciences and humanities (Resolution No. 2857, December 11, 2006) and the document Guidelines on Good Publication Practice (Committee on Publications Ethics: COPE).

Plagiarism detection policy

To detect plagiarism, the Plagius software (plagius.com.es) is used. This control stage is managed by the Editorial Committee, the co-director, and the deputy editor.

APA (American Psychological Association) 7th Edition rules are followed: https://normas-apa.org/wp-content/uploads/Guia-Normas-APA-7ma-edicion.pdf

Authorship Statement

In the case that the article submitted to the journal has more than one author or required the participation of other collaborators, the work must include, at the end, a statement of authorship and participation roles. In the taxonomy of academic collaboration networks (CRediT), different collaboration roles are listed, such as data curation, conceptualization, writing (review and editing), or supervision, among others (https://hdlab.space/taxonomia). This taxonomy aims to provide credit to all roles involved in a research process and ensure that they are visualized and recognized during the communication of the results.

When there are no collaboration roles beyond authorship and the authors have shared the writing of the work, it may be declared: "X and Y contributed jointly to the writing of this article".

Self-Archiving Policy

El taco en la brea authorizes authors to deposit the published version of articles (postprint) in repositories, websites or academic networks without commercial purposes, respecting the integrity and image of the Journal. It is mandatory that the published version includes information about the DOI assigned to each article, the name of the journal and the publisher, and that it respects the terms of the CreativeCommons license under which it was published.

Supporting data for research

Authors submitting articles to the journal must ensure the availability and preservation of the data used in them, in accordance with Law No. 26,899 on Digital Repositories. If the article is accepted, El taco en la brea recommends depositing the data generated in one of the research data repositories (such as SciELO Data), prior to its publication, so that the complete citation of the deposited data can be included in the article. The citation of the data set should appear in the references section of the resulting publication. Citing the data set allows for recognition of authorship and facilitates its location, validation, and reuse, promoting transparency in scientific research. Each data set and subset of data should be cited independently with its own DOI or similar identifier.

When it is not possible or feasible for the data to be available openly (due to confidentiality or sensitivity issues), it should be shared through a controlled access repository.

Guidelines for Writing Reviews

The same protocols used for writing articles are followed, with the following format:

Book Information: Title of the Book, Author's Full Name (unabbreviated). Place of publication: Publisher, Year; ISSN; number of pages.

Author's Name, University and/or Institution Affiliation, Country, and Email Address.

Two types of reviews will be accepted:

a) Standard Review: The review cannot exceed 1000 words.

b) Review-Essay: Starting from a recently published book, other books by the same author can be included, preferably not too far apart in time, but the focus of the work must remain on the book that represents the novelty. This type of review involves a more comprehensive and interpretive work. It cannot exceed 2000 words. Longer reviews will not be accepted.
