Abstract

DOMINGUEZ RUBIO, Lucas. Surrounding the cave. The ‘intellectual–philosopher’ in Argentina (1910–1955): a to–build model. Tópicos [online]. 2022, n.43, pp.14-17.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 1666-485X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.14409/topicos.v0i43.11889.

The question about the social function of the philosopher and philosophy systematically stalked the development of this discipline through the centuries. In the process of shaping philosophy as a university discipline in Argentina, this problem took on a particularly critical tone. For this reason, from the 1910s, the main professors of philosophy tried to provide an answer and thus justify the task of their own discipline. This paper then starts by developing the importance of this question in this context and then outlining the responses raised. At first, we mention a certain agreement in accepting a “social function” of philosophy linked to studies in the social sciences. Under an axiological scheme, in a second moment, a large part of the community of local philosophers considered that the intellectual–philosopher was the one who should, in different ways and with different purposes, identify social values. Shortly after, there were also proposals that thought of a centrally university task and others, even in the 1940s, that considered that philosophy should contribute with accounts of the formation of nationality. This text goes through these proposals chronologically until the first local journal that seemed to glimpse the international academic rules that the discipline would gradually adopt.
