Abstract

HUANCA MAMANI, Teodosio. Recuperación de embriones en hembras de alpacas y llamas con ovulación única o múltiple. RIA. Rev. investig. agropecu. [online]. 2022, vol.48, n.1, pp.48-52.  Epub Apr 06, 2022. ISSN 1669-2314.

The reproductive capacity of South American camelids is low, with a gestation period of 11.5 months and suffer early embryonic losses, so the search for successful techniques to achieve assisted reproduction, such as artificial insemination, superovulation, embryo transfer and in vitro fertilization, are strategies that are in constant development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the recovery, quality and size of embryos obtained from single ovulated and super-stimulated (multiple ovulation) donor alpacas and llamas, through the application of 1000 IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG), in the extensive breeding of the Quimsachata Experimental Station of the National Institute for Agrarian Innovation (INIA, Puno, Peru). In both species, ovarian stimulation significantly increased the number of follicles, corpora lutea, ovulation rate and number of embryos per donor female. However, the recovery rate was lower in the eCG-treated llamas and between 60 and 76% of the embryos collected were classified as transferable (excellent and good quality) according to the International Embryo Transfer Society (IETS) scale. On the other hand, no significant differences were observed in the size of the embryos according to their quality or origin (single ovulation or superovulation).
