Abstract

CARRERAS, Jesica  and  PEY, Laura. To the rhythm of the feast. Ethnography of festive communal cooking in Cusi Cusi (puna of Jujuy, Argentina). Cuad. antropol. soc. [online]. 2023, n.57, pp.111-129.  Epub May 01, 2023. ISSN 1850-275X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.34096/cas.i57.12516.

In this paper we explore the web of social relations that are activated by the relationship between food and community celebration during the celebration of May 3, the patron saint’s day and founding anniversary of an Andean town (Cusi Cusi, puna de Jujuy, Argentina). From a perspective based in rhythmanalysis and ethnography, through participant observations carried out in 2022, we analyze the multiple rhythms that characterize both the planning and the preparation and serving of traditional dishes to hundreds of diners. These rhythms are marked by materialities, actors and symbologies typical of an extraordinary context. A polyrhythm where the civic character, on the one hand, and the religious or traditional Andean celebration, on the other, coexist among protocols, expectations, reciprocities and resolution of unforeseen events.

Keywords : Festive community cooking; Andean festivity; Cusi Cusi; Rhythm analysis; Puna de Jujuy.
