Abstract

MAFFERRA, Luis Eduardo. Los paisajes forestales en torno a la ciudad colonial de Mendoza, con base en el registro antracológico. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.1, pp.43-53. ISSN 1850-373X.

In this paper, the results of the taxonomic identification of archaeological charcoal associated with the Prehispanic and Colonial periods recovered from Mendoza city are presented. Forest landscapes are characterized for different periods of occupation according to two interrelated dimensions. First, the practices of firewood use are compared. Second, the forms of this landscape are described on the basis of the taxa identified. The results enable hypotheses about the vegetation of Mendoza valley before and during the colonial period to be discussed while ecological and environmental history data are also added to this discussion. The analysis of the data reveals diachronic changes in modes of use and presence/absence of taxa. Among these results, the retraction of some native species and the introduction of exotic plants during the colonial period stand out.

Keywords : Charcoal Analysis; Historical Archaeology; Forest landscapes; Prehispanic and Colonial period.
