Abstract

GUICHON, Francisco; RE, Anahí  and  BELARDI, Juan Bautista. ONE STEP FURTHER: ROCK ART AT LA CRIOLLA RANCH (SOUTH OF CARDIEL LAKE, SANTA CRUZ PROVINCE). Comechingonia [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.1, pp.81-90. ISSN 1851-0027.

The analysis of three rock art archaeological sites placed in La Criolla Ranch, south of Cardiel Lake (Santa Cruz, Argentina), is introduced. A low frequency of motifs was identified in combination with a high morphological diversity, made by engraving and painting techniques. Thus, information on the intermediate space that links two large areas with an extensive history of scientific research, such as Cardiel Lake and Cardiel Chico plateau, is provided. The results obtained on the analysis of varnish, paint fading and overlapping of the engravings and paintings allow us to suggest the existence of at least three rock art moments of execution, which contextualize the human occupations of the area from the Middle Holocene to the 20th century.

Keywords : engravings and paintings; plateau superimpositions late Holocene Southern Patagonia.
