Abstract

MACHADO-BORGES, Thaïs. Um olhar antropológico sobre a mídia, cirurgia íntima e normalidade. Avá [online]. 2011, n.19, pp.00-00. ISSN 1851-1694.

Media representations of female genital cosmetic surgery or "intimate surgery," as it is colloquially called in Brazilian Portuguese, are the topic of this article. The study examines the way this relatively new topic has been discussed and represented in the Brazilian media (newspapers and magazines whose texts were available through the Internet). Starting from an anthropological approach to media, this article examines the way cultural products produce, establish and aestheticize patterns for feminine normality. It is argued that media discourses on female genital cosmetic surgery offer women the possibility (or necessity) to transform their bodies into perfect copies of an imaginary blueprint of femininity that weaves normality with beauty ideals, desire and pleasure.

Keywords : Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery; Media; Normality; Femininity; Cultural Texts.
