Abstract

HEREDIA, Candela Rocío. Entre la risa y la muerte: Texturas comunicacionales en la atención paliativa pediátrica. Avá [online]. 2017, n.30, pp.37-59. ISSN 1851-1694.

The article is about the relationship between child death due to serious illness and the humor in a Pediatric Palliative Care Service in a specialized hospital. Through a hospital ethnographic fieldwork in the City of Buenos Aires during the year 2015, we can observe the ways in which the laughter of those who work in the Palliative Care Service relates to the tensions that are produced by dealing with infant death. At the same time we can observe the use of irony and sarcasm in humor as a critical expression towards other non-paliativist ways of working with death. Finally, the bond between the laughter and the painful feelings that infantile death causes in the day-to-day of those who work in these areas is turned visible.

Keywords : Infant death; Humor; Pediatric Palliative Care.
