Abstract

NASCIMENTO, Lucas X; TRINDADE ARAUJO, Reginaldo  and  GIRALDEZ ALVAREZ, Lisandro D. Persistent Organic Pollutants: Impacts and Solutions to Human Health and Environment. Rev. cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2015, n.24, pp.28-34. ISSN 1851-7587.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POE) are a very heterogeneous group of substances whose common characteristic is that they cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms, so they should be removed from the environment. This review provides an overview of emerging contaminants detected in the aquatic environment and reviews the latest papers in order to reflect on the various sources of contaminants, methods of treatment and the risks to human health and environment, especially taking into account the unprecedented crisis caused by drought in the State of São Paulo (Brazil). The precautionary principle should be used to determine that preventing the emission of emerging contaminants in the environment is the most efficient way to safeguard sustainable drinking water production method, since POE are not removed by conventional treatment systems wastewater.

Keywords : Persistent organic pollutants; POE; Environment; Water treatment.
