Abstract

This article examines a board game that readers of best-seller financial success books. Cashfow is a fictitious market, in which players buy and sell assets to enhance their financial skills, with the ultimate goal of reaching 'financial freedom.' Based on ethnographic research in clubs and interviews with players in Argentina and the United States, the article focuses on four topics. First, the role of the game in establishing definitions of what it means to be rich. Second, the development of calculative financial tools. Third, players' work on the self, through which they explore what may be limiting their chances of financial success and how they ought to transform themselves. Finally, the work done by players to ft the game with reality, which allows a game made in the United States to be used in different na-tional economic contexts like that of Argentina.
