Abstract

JOUHAUD, Christian. At the Foot of the Cliff. Prismas [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.2, pp.245-251.  Epub Nov 05, 2022. ISSN 1852-0499.  http://dx.doi.org/10.48160/18520499prismas26.1314.

The metaphor “at the edge of the cliff” has been used by Roger Chartier on several occasions to describe either the crisis of historical epistemology, the works of Michel Foucault or the relationship between history and literature. Taking this last use, the article reverses the gaze from “the foot of the cliff” to show how, taking into account a sociocultural history, Chartier has investigated certain literary texts with a clear objective: the process through which readers, spectators or listeners give meaning to the texts they appropriate. Now, what kind of scale does he use to measure “the literary” in the different works he discusses? The article exposes the patterns of thought, representation and materiality that Chartier intersects in extracting specificity for what could be called a “literary fact” composed, essentially, of practices of production, dissemination and reception of texts.

Keywords : Roger Chartier; History of the Literary; Michel Foucault; Literary Work; Literary Fact.
