Abstract

DARNTON, Robert. of an American Farmer. Prismas [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.2, pp.263-269.  Epub Nov 05, 2022. ISSN 1852-0499.  http://dx.doi.org/10.48160/18520499prismas26.1316.

After recovering the vast concept of translation used by Roger Chartier in his work Éditer et traduire, the article explores the metamorphoses that a printed text undergoes when it goes through successive editions, the changes that occur in its format and the additional shifts in meaning that operate from one version to another, especially when translated into different languages. To this end, a case study is offered here based on the Letters of an American Farmer by the cartographer Michel-Guillaume-Jean de Crèvecœur, a work written in English in 1782, translated by its author into French and then transformed as he adapted it for subsequent French editions. It is a work that has had a profound influence on American studies because it was the first to offer an inaugural version of a fundamental myth in the United States: the melting pot, that is, the creation of a new people after the arrival of immigrants from various parts of Europe.
