Abstract

SCHECK, Daniel O. Lo sublime en la modernidad: De la retórica a la ética. Rev. latinoam. filos. [online]. 2009, vol.35, n.1, pp.35-83. ISSN 1852-7353.

The aim of this article is to show that during the modern age there existed a period that extended between the last twentyfive years of the 17th century and the final decade of the 18th century, when the issue of the sublime was extensively discussed. Moreover, I will try to account for the reasons why I consider that the matter of the sublime became central in this period and the manner in which a group of less known authors influenced on the thought of Burke, Kant, and Schiller. Finally, I will maintain the idea that the more substantial discussions on the sublime, at the end of period, centered on the attempt to narrow the gap between the physical dimension and the moral dimension of the subject.

Keywords : Sublime; Modern age; Rhetoric; Esthetics; Ethics.
