Abstract
FONTI, Diego. Judaism and Modernity: An investigation concerning a tense relationship from the perspectives of Mendelssohn, Cohen and Rosenzweig. Soc. relig. [online]. 2011, vol.21, n.34-35. ISSN 1853-7081.
The tense relationship between the advance of the scientific worldview and the religious inheritance is not unknown to Judaism. In order to expose the main characteristics of this tension, this paper will have recourse to the main contributions of functionalist philosophy of religion and of philosophical hermeneutics. Within this framework we will examine the answers of Moses Mendelssohn, Hermann Cohen and Franz Rosenzweig. These philosophers show a gradual incorporation of the contributions of modern science, beginning with a univocal comprehension of reason as tribunal of religious contents. But gradually and in coherence with the social consolidation of Judaism are recognized the characteristics of Judaism which are irreductible to Occident. From the viewpoint of the realized event of their religiosity, they present a way of subjectivity and temporality which is exposed as realized response to a commandment, in view of a messianic future and a fulfilled humanity, and this response is interpreted as able to inspire and judge the concrete historical institutions.
