Abstract

LUDUENA, Gustavo. Discourse, performance and political imagination in a catholic ritual. Soc. relig. [online]. 2011, vol.21, n.36, pp.89-115. ISSN 1853-7081.

From the perspective of symbolic anthropology and discourse analysis, this article approaches the religious narrative and performance of a Catholic ritual. Focusing on the annual celebration of a Holy Week procession carried out in Victoria, Entre Ríos, the study of the empirical data -ethnographically collected- shows the concurrence of symbolic processes of metaphor and metonymic addressed to represent the Argentinean people, its crises and hopes, as well as its enemies. Also, the analysis presents the rhetorical procedures whereby actors imagine an alternative social reality. To sum up, this work suggests that the social experience of subjects -affected by economical and political variables- is reflected in their religious action, being ritual one of the main ways of expression of those vividly experiences.

Keywords : Discourse; Performance; Ritual; Catholicism; Politics.
