Abstract

DECKER, Norberto. An ethnographic eye to the study of the relations between government and religion in the promotion of public policies. Soc. relig. [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.39, pp.79-99. ISSN 1853-7081.

This essay is dedicated to reflect upon the practices which conform religions in the universe of the contemporary societies. Based on a discussion about the problematic of government and sovereignty, we intend to do an analysis of the modern liberal state and its relation with humanitarian and assistance actions. The specific focus of this work is to acknowledge the way through which occurs the insertion of the religions in the public space, especially in the promotion of public policies. We observe also the role of anthropology, the type of knowledge produced by this discipline and, finally, the (political) relevance of an ethnographic eye in the analysis aimed at the study of the interfaces between state, politics, religion and assistance.

Keywords : Religion; Politics; State; Assistance.
