Abstract

GIUMBELLI, Emerson. Public Culture: Evangelicals and their presence in Brazilian society. Soc. relig. [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.40, pp.13-57. ISSN 1853-7081.

Public Culture: Evangelicals and their presence in Brazilian society. This article offers some reflections and explorations on the expansion of evangelicals [evangélicos] in Brazil in recent decades, with particular attention to some modes of their public presence. That presence is exemplified and problematized with the help of several situations: television programs, sporting events, gospel concerts, actions in the slums and prisons, evangelization activities in rail cars and public parks. The article searches to think about - through the notion of "public culture" - the configurations that mark this evangelical presence, in contrast to the fields of Catholicism and Afro-Brazilian religions. The broader context of the relationship between the state, religion and society in recent years in Brazil is also considered in the attempt to reflect on the impact of evangelical expansion.

Keywords : Evangelicals; Culture; Brazil; Public space.
