Abstract

FLANAGAN, Brian P. Pope Francis from an American perspective. Soc. relig. [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.40, pp.272-291. ISSN 1853-7081.

Pope Francis from an American perspective. Reflections of a U.S. theologian and ecumenist on reactions to Pope Francis's election in the United States. Drawing primarily upon published reports in the weeks following Francis' election, the article explores the many "firsts" of Francis's papacy, the particular political and ecclesial situations that shaped how Pope Francis was viewed in the United States, and the particular reactions of U.S. Latinos/as to the new pope. It concludes with reflections about the future possibilities for the Catholic Church in the United States made possible by Pope Francis's election.

Keywords : Pope Francis; United States; Catholic Church; political polarization; Benedict XVI..
