Abstract

BLANCARTE, Roberto. Francis's unknown. Soc. relig. [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.40, pp.292-308. ISSN 1853-7081.

Francis's unknow. In this paper I establish the possibilities for change in the Catholic Church during Francis's papacy, considering structural issues of the institution. First I will point out how the choice of Francis represents an element of continuity and not change, because he comes from one of the more conservative churches in the world, and because his reform projects a review of the style of the Church government and not its difficult relationship with modernity. Second, I will sustain that the new pontiff's Latinamerican condition does not imply a recovery of believers in that subcontinent but, it entails a new pastoral approach. Finally, I will point out three quibbles around the idea of " a Church for the poor", noting that this notion is a historical concern within the Catholicism that must not be confused with a revolutionary proposal or an abandonment of the quest for power.
