Abstract

CERIANI CERNADAS, César. Power configurations in the indigenous evangelical field of Argentine Chaco. Soc. relig. [online]. 2014, vol.24, n.41, pp.13-41. ISSN 1853-7081.

Based on the theoretical proposal of Norbert Elias on unequal power settings, this paper explores the ideological conflicts that cross the evangelical religious field between indigenous Argentine Chaco. Called Evangelio by the actors, this area forms a conflict space where competitions arise for the symbolic and political capital among different religious groups and agents of mainstream society. Two key topics organized the study: 1. an historical and conceptual mapping of Chaco indigenous religious field 2. an anthropological approach on the main configurations of power, where differences in the uses and meanings of collective memory, political struggles for leadership and disputes over worship practices delimit an overview of antagonisms, stigmatization and identity recreations.

Keywords : Indigenous evangelism; Argentine Chaco.
