Abstract

RODRIGUES, Donizete Aparecido  and  ARAUJO, Marcos. Marriage in the Pentecostalism: ethnographic notes on the wedding of a pastor of the Universal Church of the King of God in Spain. Soc. relig. [online]. 2016, vol.26, n.45, pp.73-94. ISSN 1853-7081.

After an anthropological discussion about marriage in the Pentecostal context, this paper aims to describe ethnographically a wedding ceremony held at the principal temple of 'Familia Unida' (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God - UCKG) in Spain, between a Brazilian pastor, working in Barcelona, and a Honduran woman member of this church. The life trajectory descriptions of the bride and groom them selves and some of the faithful and workers allow us to analyze the different religious ethos which comprise the UCKG membership and how this ethosinteract with each other in the creation of a dynamic, cohesive, heterogeneous and transnational structure of this important Pentecostal church. The wedding of a pastor is a sui generis event, able to offer socio-cultural elements that help in the understanding the social organization strategies of this syncretic institution of Brazilian origin and present in all continents and with an important presence in Europe and USA.
