Abstract
DA COSTA, Néstor. Religion in prison: changes in the very secular Uruguay. Soc. relig. [online]. 2016, vol.26, n.46, pp.224-238. ISSN 1853-7081.
Uruguay is a country characterized by its model of “laicité” that demarcates a form of presence of religion in society with emphasis on privatization of religion, and in the distance or disregard the State in relation to religion. As consequence of this, the free expression of religion in Uruguayan prisons was not assured until few years ago. The article is related to a qualitative research conducted in prisons in Montevideo oriented to understand the demands of religious care of persons deprived of liberty and the prospects of prison authorities, technical and religious actors. Given the peculiarity of the country it is necessary to explore some of the principal characteristics about the religious place in Uruguayan society to provide a wide perspective to understand it.
