Abstract

D'ANGELO, Ana. From swamis to gurus: A historical genealogy of yoga types practiced in Argentina: between neo-hinduism and New Age. Soc. relig. [online]. 2018, vol.28, n.49, pp.101-134. ISSN 1853-7081.

The primary objective of this article is to contribute to the systematization of the different types of yoga practiced in contemporary Argentina, tracing back the main figures of a historical genealogy originated in transnational processes of neo-hinduism expansion. Moreover, common keys to what has been called the New Age movement are identified (neither reducing the specificity of yoga nor subsuming its wider process of dissemination). It then subscribes, to social sciences debates -particularly on the anthropology field- on the capacity of categories such as "religion" and "spirituality" to explain complex processes that exceed those native classifications. The article is based on written sources and multisited fieldwork among yoga practitioners in Mar del Plata city.

Keywords : Yoga Trasnacionalization; Neo-Hinduism; New Age.
