Abstract

M. TORRES, Germán S.. Contributions for the understanding of public education and laicity in contemporary Argentina. Soc. relig. [online]. 2018, vol.28, n.49, pp.165-196. ISSN 1853-7081.

The paper aims to characterize a set of relevant analytical dimensions for the understanding of laicity in the national educational sphere. Towards the upcoming construction of a general and internationally comparative index, we will focus on the presence of religion in the educational system from an analysis of legal regulations and public policies in contemporary Argentina. Regulations and educational policies will be described following these relevant indicators: funding of religious educational institutions; religious formation in public educational institutions; existence of sex education programs; and involvement of religious actors in educational policy /programs. We will point at the singular jurisdictional characteristics in the national heterogeneity given by educational federalism and the complex and diverse shaping of educational policy and laicity at the national and the provincial level. Finally, disputes over the senses and the government of education between political and religious actors given in the context of historical trajectories, tensions, memories and dissimilar political cultures will be highlighted.

Keywords : Laicity; Public Education; Religious Education; Sex Education; Argentina.
