Abstract

SEIGUER, Paula. On the need for problematizing historical Protestantism. Re-reading "Campo evangélico y pentecostalismo en la Argentina", by HilarioWynarczyk and Pablo Semán, 25 years after its publication. Soc. relig. [online]. 2020, vol.30, n.53, pp.39-61. ISSN 0326-9795.

This article posits the need for rethinking the framework proposed 25 years ago by Hilario Wynarczyk and Pablo Semán in their seminal article "Campo evangélico y pentecostalismo en la Argentina" in the light of theoretical advances made by scholars of religious minorities and of the knowledge accumulated in the works of historians. It therefore questions the existence of homogeneous "waves" of churches that arrived in Argentina during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and a too-linear view of their development, and proposes applying to the past the complexity of analysis employed for the present. It also proposes that a less schematic view would allow for a renewal of the questions on the conformation of an Evangelical field and especially on the relationships of diverse churches with the phenomenon of Pentecostalism.

Keywords : Protestant churches; historical Protestantism; Wynarczyk; Semán.
