Abstract

ORO, Ari Pedro  and  ALVES, Daniel. Jair Bolsonaro, negationist Evangelical leaders and politization of the new Coronavirus pandemic in Brazil. Soc. relig. [online]. 2020, vol.30, n.54, pp.121-147. ISSN 0326-9795.

This article deals with the alignment, or informal alliance, between the current Brazilian president Jair Messias Bolsonaro and some Evangelical Pentecostal leaders those resist to scientific arguments concerning the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and consequently relativize or deny the practical cautions related to it. Initially, it shows this alliance was strategically built for the election of the current president. The article then discusses the similar and even coincidental perceptions shared by the president and those negationist evangelical leaders about the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil. Finally, it explores some symbolic and practical logics that ensure such alliance.

Keywords : Bolsonaro; Evangelicals; alliance; coronavirus.
