Abstract

RODRIGUEZ LOPEZ, Alejandro. For a historical ethnography of heterodox Catholic religiosities. Soc. relig. [online]. 2021, vol.31, n.56, pp.22-22. ISSN 0326-9795.

The aim of the article is to outline a research space on heterodox Catholic religiosities that articulates methods and sources from history and socioanthropology, seeking to highlight the epistemological unity of the social sciences. In this sense, rather than an interdisciplinary proposal based on "dialogue" between separate sets of knowledge and practices (disciplines), an approach based on the theoretical-methodological complementarity of social thought is proposed. In addition to this, it is based on a critical treatment of the paradigm of "religious modernity" and reflects on the need to overcome analytical dichotomies in terms of the historically of the religious phenomenon (traditional-modern); placing the “past of the present” of Latin American religiosity as the epistemological foundation of regional theorization on religion. Finally, and as an anchor point for our discussion, we outline some aspects to consider in the study of the heterodox cult of a skeletal saint from the southern region of Mexico and Guatemala: San Pascualito.

Keywords : historical ethnography; heterodox religiosities; catholicism; Latin America; San Pascualito.
