Abstract

CAILA, M. Mercedes  and  GOMEZ, Silvia B.. Democracy and Environmental Crisis: Rights at Stake?. Temas debates (En línea) [online]. 2023, n.45, suppl.1, pp.37-44. ISSN 1853-984X.

The environmental crisis and the big changes that have taken place since 2020 have broadly questioned liberal democracy. The predatory way in which human kind has been connecting with Nature has led to huge disasters. The corollary of these disasters has been a pandemic that put at stake governments and generated claims from a part of the society that ended up accusing democracy and democratic leaders of not being able to solve the problems produced in that predicament, without guaranteeing access to either civil or social rights. The present capitalist productive practices are the real cause of the major ecosystem disequilibrium with a great impact on health. Until now, no measures have been taken to reduce such impact. Therefore, we are undergoing an alarming situation worldwide.

Keywords : democracy; environmental crisis; rights; demands; disequilibrium.
