The article describes the dispute around the meaning attributed to democracy since its recovery in 1983, identifying moments marked by minimal agreements, in the initial stretch, and moments of discord, from the new century. The text reveals the counterpoints that divided the academic field on this issue, and also supports the need to take into account the meanings that come from the experiences? and negative perceptions that citizens experience? in democracy -their disappointments and disillusionments-, if we want to avoid its failure.
