Abstract

SERRONI PEROSA, Graziela  and  SOARES DA SILVA, Alessandro. Private Higher Education: the Paradoxes of Brazilian Educational Expansion. Propuesta educativa (Online) [online]. 2021, n.55, pp.15-33. ISSN 1995-7785.

Based on statistics from the Higher Education Census and field research in private higher education institutions, we seek in this article to reflect on the segmentation of the Brazilian higher education system and its target public. We address two moments of expansion of Brazilian higher education (1960 and 2000), being interested, more specifically, in the available clues about the social characteristics of students in the complex and multifaceted space of Brazilian higher education. Despite the expansion of access opportunities recorded in recent years, the results point to the survival of old forms of vertical segmentation of the Brazilian educational system and the emergence of new inequalities, especially those related to the public seeking distance and face-to-face courses, in a state prior to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, when distance education was considered the only alternative for pursuing education given the country's health conditions.

Keywords : Higher education; Inequality; Private higher education; Social characteristics of students.
