Abstract

SEPULVEDA, LEANDRO. Distance Technical Education? Experiences and Learning from two years of Confinement of Technical Education Teachers in Chile. Propuesta educativa (Online) [online]. 2023, n.59, pp.10-26. ISSN 1995-7785.

This article addresses the distance education experiences of Chilean high school teachers of professional technical education during the prolonged confinement of the COVID 19 pandemic. Technical education was acutely affected by this situation, having to resort to alternative strategies to customary practical teaching practices within a context of scarce resources and weak institutional preparation to face this challenge. This work is based on evidence gathered from an online survey answered by 390 teachers and 31 semi-structured interviews conducted between July 2020 and November 2021.The results reveal formative limitations and the negative effect on the career paths of students who participated in technical education during this period. They also provide a set of background data that highlight the importance of discussing alternative mechanisms of training students in this type of education and, in particular, expanding educational systems that can resort to alternatives such as simulators and virtual spaces in order to fulfill the curricular objectives of education for work.
