Abstract

LAURENCENA, Patricia; DELUCHI, Marta; ROJO, Adolfo  and  KRUSE, Eduardo. Influence of groundwater exploitation in a sector of the periurban area of La Plata. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2010, vol.66, n.4, pp.484-489. ISSN 0004-4822.

In the periurban sector of the city of La Plata both human consumption and irrigation compete for the exploitation of groundwater. In this framework, the work objective is to analyze the impact generated by the displacement of the groundwater exploitation wells from the urban to the periurban area where additionally, local exploitation is conveyed for the horticulture-floriculture development. The need of extracting increasing volumes to supply drinkable water to the City of La Plata and surrounding areas has produced a depression cone affecting both the phreatic and Puelche aquifer that reaches the periurban area. As a consequence, changes in the natural groundwater flow direction have been detected in the northern drainage divide of the Arroyo El Pescado basin. The Northern divide was formerly a recharge area of the basin but presently it drains towards the exploitation zone. The knowledge and close follow up of the hydrological conditions of the area with competing water use is an unavoidable work base to reach a land ordering that minimizes the effect of groundwater overexploitation.

Keywords : Groundwater exploitation; Conflicting water use; La Plata.
