Abstract

MOUZO, Félix H. Edad del golfo san matías, plataforma continental Argentina y la estratigrafía en el gran bajo de San antonio, provincia de Río negro. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2014, vol.71, n.1, pp.125-138. ISSN 0004-4822.

The study of seismic data from surveys by the Argentine Hydrographic Service and a private company in the gulf of San Mafias show that only two marine depositional sequences cover the folded bedrock making the depression lodging the gulf. Since the bedrock corresponds to the middle-late Tertiary, it follows that the gulf was impacted by only two Quaternary transgressions and, consequently, the original submergence occurred during the Last Interglacial (MIS 5e). So far as these results are at variance with part of the published onshore stratigraphic data for the region surrounding San Antonio Bay -within the great Patagonian depression of San Antonio- the appropriate literature for the area were revised. The results of such revision, as well as other onshore data also presented here, lead to propose modifications to the commonly accepted stratigraphic classification for the area.

Keywords : Marine seismics; Quaternary; Transgressions; Marine terraces; Beachrock; Closed depressions.
