Abstract

Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2015, vol.72, n.1, pp.120-135. ISSN 0004-4822.

Both exploratory studies and hydrocarbon field development studies are defined by the investment strategies of the companies. The need to increase production often entails urgency in new well proposals, situation that does not allow us to carefully consider the uncertainties associated with the geological attributes and fluid characteristics that characterize or control the reservoir extension in the fields. With the aim of understanding the extension of the hydrocarbon accumulations in a recently discovered block and optimizing future development plans, new appraisal well locations were defined strongly down dip in the structure (50m to 100m down dip from existing wells). The reservoir identification based on seismic data demonstrated not to be a powerful tool mainly due to the lack of contrast of acoustic impedance inside the productive intervals. This situation contributed and promoted the search process and identification of reservoir characterization parallelisms between fields. Analogies with neighboring fields (pseudo-capillary curves, flow units, quality of reservoirs and flow distribution) allowed the estimation of the location of fluid contact and the potential extension of the hydrocarbon accumulation in this new area. Taking into account the almost complete absence of information, the results of this analysis provided an improvement in the knowledge of the field. This methodology, simple from its conception, proved to be valid when establishing analogies between fields with similar geologic histories, and it constituted an attempt to reduce inherent uncertainties about the high risk well proposal in fields with early development in the basin.
