Abstract
CAPLLONCH, Patricia. An overview of bird migrations in Argentina. Hornero [online]. 2018, vol.33, n.1, pp.01-18. ISSN 0073-3407.
We offer a review of migrations and movements of birds in Argentina. We consider 458 species and subspecies with proven or sufficiently justified migratory movements; non-passerines include 206 species and subspecies belonging to 21 orders and passerines include 252 species, 126 within the suborder Tyranni (Suboscines) and 126 of the suborder Passeres (Oscines). All these species and subspecies were grouped into nine types of migratory displacement patterns: (1) displacements in the mountainous west, (2) displacements in the Yungas, (3) altitudinal displacements, (4) displacements between the Argentinean litoral and the Pantanal, (5) longitudinal displacements, (6) Patagonian Atlantic displacements, (7) cold-temperate southern continental displacements, (8) displacements within the Chaco, Espinal and Cerrado, and (9) temperate-tropical displacements.
