Abstract
GORLERI, Fabricio. La Garza Encapuchada (Nyctanassa violacea), una nueva especie para Argentina . Hornero [online]. 2019, vol.34, n.2, pp.50-52. ISSN 0073-3407.
The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) is widely distributed in the Americas. It is rapidly expanding southwards on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, and has been regularly seen in northern Chile since 2009. However, it has never been reported in Argentina. Here, I present the first documented record of the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron for Argentina, based on an observation made in Tilcara, Jujuy, on October 22, 2018. The presence of this species in the country may have been facilitated by the ongoing expansion and its vagrant behavior -evidenced by multiple sightings far from its regular range. If the process of expansion continues over time and the number of birders continues to grow, new records of the Yellow-crowned Heron should occur and will shed more light on its regional status.
