Abstract

YAPURA, Agustina M. et al. URBAN BIRD COMMUNITY COMPOSITION AND SEASONAL VARIATION IN SAN SALVADOR DE JUJUY, ARGENTINA. Hornero [online]. 2022, vol.37, n.2, pp.20-20. ISSN 0073-3407.

Cities are heterogeneous and dynamic systems that offer new spaces and available resources that the bird community could take advantage of. For this reason, it is important to study the bird communities in urban systems. In this work, the composition and seasonal variation of the bird community is analyzed in the city of San Salvador de Jujuy, northwest of Argentina. From July 2021 to April 2022, 44 sampling sites were selected in different areas of the city, covering the different seasons of the year. Eight thousand six hundred sev-enty-five individuals were recorded, belonging to 36 families and 124 bird species. The most abundant species throughout the sampling sites were Columba livia, Passer domesticus, Sicalis flaveola, Pitangus sulphuratus, Furnarius rufus, Molothrus bonariensis and Psittacara mitratus. Dominant bird species were found in certain seasons, some of them are important due to their conservation status. Bird species richness and abundance were similar among the studied seasons. This is a first step towards understanding the spatio-temporal pattern of bird diversity in this city, which will allow future studies of the impact of urbanization on the urban avifauna dynamics.
