Introduction. The knowledge of the age at which children develop speech abilities is relevant for the evaluation of language, a central aspect of psychomotor development. During the period from 1989 to 1995, the Department of Growth and Development carried out a national survey on psychomotor development. A final sample of 3,573 children aged 0-5 years were studied, and the percentiles of age of attainment of 78 maturity milestones were estimated and used for the construction of PRUNAPE (a national screening test). The item on the ability of the child to say in a specific way "mom or dad" could not be assessed. Hence, a survey was organized in order to achieve the following objetive. Objective. To estimate the percentiles of the age of attainment of both of these words, and incorporate this information into the national screening test. Population, material and methods. Based on a crosssectional design, six selected pediatricians, three medical students supervised by a pediatrician, and an educational psychologist from different provinces of the country evaluated in their offices the ability of 333 children under 2 years of age to say "mom-dad" in a specific way (the right word to the right parent). Sample size has been previously estimated, on the basis of obtaining 95% confidence intervals for an estimated length of 0.10 years or less for the 50^th centile. A logistic regression was fit to the 329 children final sample and the 25^th, 50^th, 75^th and 90^th percentiles and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the age of attaining the milestone were estimated. Results. Selected percentiles (± CI) were: 0.87 (0.79- 0.93), 1.08 (1.03-1.15), 1.36 (1.28-1.48), 1.70 (1.55- 1.96) years, respectively. Conclusion. These percentiles are in accordance with the expected values of previous studies and can be used in everyday pediatric practice. They will be incorporated to the national screening test.
