Abstract

LARREGINA, Alejandra et al. Microcytic anemia differential diagnostic. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2004, vol.38, n.4, pp.465-469. ISSN 0325-2957.

Microcytic anemia is usually defined as a result of a reduced mean corpuscular volume (VCM). He most frecuent forms are due to iron deficiencies or thalassemic syndromes. In this work series of 250 blood counts with VCM values under 80 fL were chosen (over a total of 8.738 analysed). The pattern of distribution was 76% for women and the mean age was 37.5 years old. On these samples were also performed: serum iron, hemoglobin electrophoresis (Hb), and the occurrence of IVSI-1, IVSI-6, IVSI 110 mutations and codon 39 of exon 2. Two well defined populations were obtained: ferropenic patinets (n = 152) and minor thalassemic patients (n=81). Patients with an Erythrocytic Distribution Area (ADE) higher than 20% did not present mutations by they were ferropenic. Measured values of HbA2 above 3.5% were related with the occurence of one of the mentioned mutations. The most common one was IVSI-100 with a value of 12% in good agreement with other studies for Argentina.

Keywords : microcytic anemia; ferropenia; thalassemia.
