Abstract

The objective of the present study was to identify the relationship between the presence of ApoA-I in urine and: a) the renal functional in damage predominantly glomerular as well as in tubulointersticial pathology b) the alpha 1-microglobulin and beta 2-microglobulin levels as markers of tubular dysfunction. Twenty-four hour collection urine was processed (97). Total protein (Exton), alpha 1-microglobulin and beta 2-microglobulin (Immunoturbidimetry, Roche, USA) quantitation were performed. SDS-PAGE, electrophoresis on cellulose acetate with silver stain, and immunobloting were performed according to habitual procedures. A statistically significant association between the presence of ApoA-I and proteinuria values greater than 3g/L (p < 0.0001) and a glomerulo-tubular profile (p < 0.01) was observed. In patients with renal failure (33), the association between the presence of ApoA-I and alfa 1-microglobulin and beta 2-microglobulin was statistically non-significant, while a correlation was found between both low molecular weight proteins and the clearence of creatinine (r = -0.48, p < 0.001 y -0.33, p < 0.05 respectively). Then, the ApoA-I loss could be a function of the glomerular selectivity. Its utility as a protein marker of post-renal hematuria and proteinuria must be analyzed in the context of the protein profile in the SDS-PAGE.
