Abstract

SALAZAR LUGO, Raquel; GONZALEZ, María; CASTRO-GUERRA, Dinorah  and  ARENDS, Anabel. bA and bS globin gene haplotypes in Campoma, Estado Sucre, Venezuela. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2006, vol.40, n.2, pp.205-211. ISSN 0325-2957.

b-globin gene cluster haplotypes were analysed in 70 bA and 4 bS globin gene-bearing chromosomes in a Venezuelan mixed population. Eleven haplotypes were observed in bA chromosomes, the three most common being 2 (37.5%), 3 (20.7%) and 5 (10.2%); all others showed prevalences below 10%. The bS gene cluster showed association with Benin haplotype (50%) and Sen haplotypes (25%) and an atypical haplotype (25%). When bA haplotypes were compared with those of 17 groups, using the phylogenetic tree, it was found that Campoma clustered with half-breed populations that have a high African component, being closer to the North American black population.

Keywords : haplotypes; bA and bS globin gene; Campoma (Venezuela); sickle-cell anemia.
