The aim of this paper was to analyze the lipid profile, plasma levels of apolipoproteins and fibrinogen in a group of HIV+/AIDS adults. The study was performed on 41 patients (19 HIV+ and 22 AIDS), between 26 and 44 years old. Body weight, W (kg) and height, H (m) were determined, and the Body Mass Index calculated (W/H2). Blood samples were collected from fasting patients. Plasma cholesterol (TC), HDL and LDL, triglycerides, fibrinogen and apolipoproteins were determined. Some patients from both groups showed overweight concomitant with increased levels of fibrinogen and apolipoprotein B levels and decreased HDL values. Fibrinogen and Apo B measurements seem to be more sensitive than TC and LDL determinations. These findings support previous studies on HIV+/AIDS-infected infants, and stress the importance of incorporating fibrinogen and apolipoprotein B in the periodic nutritional control of these patients. This would enable an early evaluation of cardiovascular risk and the assessment of the therapeutic guidelines, implemented along with the specific anti retroviral treatment and adequate selection of food with a protector effect on plasma lipids.
