Abstract
FOSCH, Sonia Elena; YONES, Cristian; TROSSERO, Marta and GROSSO, Omar. Influence of the contraceptive method on the vaginal function profile in a social microenvironment. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2011, vol.45, n.4, pp.763-772. ISSN 0325-2957.
The vagina is an autonomous organ whose functional importance is crucial in sexual and reproductive health. Vaginal dysfunction (VD) is a high-prevalence pathology, so it is important to determine the impact of different contraceptive methods on it. The frequency of Basic Vaginal States (BVS) and detection of yeasts (Y) and trichomonas (TV) are studied in (asymptomatic) reproductive age women attending family planning controls, as a function of different contraceptive methods. A total of 210 women are studied by microscopic tests (Balance of vaginal content, BAVACO). By integrating Nugent Numerical Value (NV) and Vaginal Inflammatory Response (VIR), five BVS are defined: I) Normal Microbiota (NM), II) Normal Microbiota with VIR (NM+VIR), III) Intermediate Microbiota (IM); with incipient alteration without VIR, IV) Bacterial Vaginosis (BV); significantly altered microbiota without VIR and V) Nonspecific Microbial Vaginitis (NMV); altered microbiota with significant VIR. The presence of Y and TV are included in the analysis. The following values are obtained in the total series: 35% NM; 15% NM+VIR; 12% IM; 13% BV and 25% NMV. Among other results, relative frequencies show that using Hormone Contraceptives significantly increases NM and decreases BV, while the Intrauterine Device increases BV, and the Condom increases the number of women with NM+VIR.
