In the last decades the number of notifications by scorpion stings and deaths by scorpion envenoming increased very significantly in Argentina. In the period 1993-1999 three deaths were reported while in the period 2000-2006, nineteen deaths were registered, turning the envenomation by these arachnids in one of the envenoming of highest sanitary impact in Argentina. In this brief revision some of the known and proposed toxic mechanisms for scorpion envenomation as well as some of the venom discovered components in the venom of Tityus trivittatus the scorpion of highest medical importance in Argentina, are described.
