Abstract

CHAMORRO, María Eugenia; MALTANERI, Romina; VITTORI, Daniela  and  NESSE, Alcira. Las múltiples facetas de la eritropoyetina. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2023, vol.57, n.1, pp.74-83. ISSN 0325-2957.

The glycoprotein erythropoietin has long been known for its erythropoietic function in the regulation of red blood cell production, which led to the successful treatment of anemia related to different diseases. However, both the expression of the hormone and that of its specific receptor were also observed in non-hematopoietic tissues, thus leading, in recent years, to the development of numerous in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrating protection of such tissues by erythropoietin. This review presents our laboratory’s contribution to the knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the cytoprotective effects of erythropoietin, such as the inhibition of apoptosis and oxidative stress and the induction of angiogenesis, as well as a variable behaviour in an inflammatory environment. The importance of these findings lies not only in the possibility of establishing new therapeutic strategies focused on the protection of different tissues, but also in avoiding the undesired effects of the treatment.

Keywords : Cellular protection; Oxidative stress; Erythropoietin; Apoptosis; Angiogenesis; Inflammation.
