Abstract

BILBAO, Lucas. "Gringos" in the frontier: the priests of Tandil and Azul in the second half of 19thcentury. Folia [online]. 2015, n.23, pp.243-260. ISSN 0325-8238.

The objective of this research is to provide a first approach to the clergy of the last two curates in the south border of Buenos Aires province; namely Tandil and Azul between the years 1850 and 1880. Management of the sacraments, preservation of the familiar institutions, or religious instruction were some of the pastoral functions performed by those priests. During this stage of broadening the occupied space through the creation of new partidos (administrative divisions) -and new parishes-, the priests were again convened to fulfill their duty of civilizing machine. Their possibilities of action were not always optimal in this scenario. Nevertheless, they were not alone: a reformulation of relationships and work beside civil authorities has become evident. The present research was developed using unpublished documentary sources from perishes, justice of peace of both partidos, as well as press and government documents from that period.

Keywords : Clergy; Frontier; 19supth/supcentury; Buenos Aires'rural area.
