Abstract

REALI, M. Laura. Remembering the "Defense of Paysandú" in the Traditions of the Uruguayan National Party. Folia [online]. 2016, n.25, pp.159-186. ISSN 0325-8238.

This article examines the political and military conflicts in Uruguay immediately preceding the Treaty of the Triple Alliance (May 1865), which led to the Paraguayan War, in order to study the building of political parties’ traditions in Uruguay during the last third of the nineteenth century. These events changed the power relationships of both the local and international political fields. After the war, the remembering of these events became a factor leading to further political mobilization in Uruguay contributing to fractures of memory or to generate feelings of political and party belonging. This article focuses on the "Defense of Paysandú" and its remembering during the decades leading to the emergence and consolidation of the Uruguayan National Party.

Keywords : Paraguayan War; Uruguayan National Party; Siege of Paysandú; commemorations.
