Abstract
CARRASCO, Guillermo. Crimes and electoral violence: challenges for mexican democracy (2005-2017). Folia [online]. 2018, n.32, pp.199-220. ISSN 0325-8238. http://dx.doi.org/10.30972/fhn.0323503.
The objective of this paper is to understand the magnitude of the political-electoral violence in Mexico between 2005 and 2017. Hence, the preliminary investigations done by the Fiscalía Especializada para la Atención de los Delitos Electorales are analyzed. This is complemmented by the search for acts of electoral violence that are recorded in various media, with special emphasis on the murder of local authorities. It is expected to understand the electoral crimes associated with violence and locate the latter as an element that questions democracy and electoral processes in Mexico. Thus, this research supports the understanding of the consequences of this phenomenon for a democracy that slowly advances towards its consolidation due, among other problems, to the violence that is used as a tool of political, social and electoral control. The problem is that electoral violence questions the basic principles of democratic participation such as equality of vote, freedom of ideas, decisions of voters, and open and peaceful competition for access to power.
