Abstract

WHIGHAM, Thomas; CASAL, Juan Manuel  and  RAMIREZ BRASCHI, Dardo. The question of perspective in the origins of the Paraguayan war. a conversation between Thomas Whigham, Juan Manuel Casal and Dardo Ramírez Braschi. Folia [online]. 2020, n.38, pp.137-156. ISSN 0325-8238.  http://dx.doi.org/10.30972/fhn.0384466.

The Triple Alliance War (1864-1870) is generally regarded as a major catalitic event in 19th century South America. Its origins, however, are still much disputed. In thisconversatorio, three senior historians (an Argentine, a Uruguayan, and a North American) discuss the causes of the conflict and, in particular, how the historiography of the war has been affected by various national viewpoints. All three call for more and more nuanced studies of the war's origins, and in particular, they caution against interpretations that lack sufficient documentary evidence. Speculations coming from all directions are welcome, they note, but only a closer reading of documentary materials will yield the superior sort of research that the topic requires. In addition, real progress depends on scholars from different nations and different historical schools discussing how best to develop this area.

Keywords : Paraguay; Historiography; Politics; South America.
