Abstract

MAZZETTI LATINI, Carolina. THE COLOR OF DEATH: IMAGINARY MEANINGS IN OLD AGE. Folia [online]. 2022, n.45, pp.7-34. ISSN 0325-8238.  http://dx.doi.org/10.30972/fhn.0456297.

The article presents part of the results of an investigation into the social imaginaries of death in old age. In this framework, the colour of death constituted an evocative stimulus for the recognition of associations and figurations around spiritual/religious beliefs that supported the imaginary meanings. The study was carried out during the period 2017-2020 and had a qualitative design from an interpretative biographical framework that allowed the analysis of the experiences of older people in the city of Córdoba (Argentina). The biographical interview technique was used to recover the life story. In conclusion, the way in which older people imagine death and/or dying exhibited a display of symbolic elements (verbal, written, auditory, visual and audiovisual) endowed with personal meaning, where memories, emotions and knowledge are present, as well as doubts and questions; revealing the oscillation between more or less strict adherence to certain instituted or hegemonic symbols and images and more flexible and insubordinate appropriations.
